Trailblazing Artists from Trinidad, published by Oxford University Press, tells the story of three iconic artists from the Caribbean island of Trinidad - Winifred Atwell, Althea McNish and Baroness Floella Benjamin. Learn how they have changed the world we live in and about different types of art. There are fun activities for you to try at home or school too!Trailblazing Artists from Trinidad is part of the Readerful Independent Library for children aged 8 to 9. Oxford Reading Level 15.
Hello and welcome!
I'm a children's author and science writer. I started writing about science for older readers. Then realised that I loved writing for younger readers too.
Now, I write about all kinds of stories for children. Some are made up stories from my imagination and some are factual and based on the world and people around us. Find out more about me below!
Did you like reading as a child?
Yes I did! When I was younger I used to fall asleep reading and my mum would often find me under my bed sleeping with a book in one hand and a torch in the other hand!What was your favourite subject at school?
I loved writing stories so English was my favourite subject. I had a very inspiring English teacher who loved books and was so enthusiastic about them that she made me feel that way too. I also really liked art and science.Why did you pick these three people for your book Trailblazing Artists from Trinidad?
I came across Althea McNish after watching an old documentary and I couldn't believe that I had never learnt about her at school or anywhere. She was a textile designer who transformed the fashion and textile industry and she wasn't widely known.I knew about Winifred Atwell but again I had never learnt about her at school. She was an accomplished concert pianist who had her own talk show in the 1950s/60s which was incredible for a Black woman at that time. There are so many people who have helped make the world a better place and I want to share their stories so they are not forgotten.Everyone knows Baroness Floella Benjamin! I wanted to include her because she's Floella Benjamin! Her story is incredible. I met her once briefly and she was lovely.What do you like most about writing?
That I get to learn about really interesting people when I'm writing about real people and things that have happened. When I'm writing made up stories, I like that I get to create and bring characters and stories to life - all from my imagination!What was your favourite book as a kid?
It's really hard to choose just one. What I can tell you is that I really enjoyed adventure and mystery stories where children ran around, exploring and climbing trees. I still enjoy mystery stories. I don't do as much tree climbing as I used to but a lot of the characters in my stories do!
